Ok, lo so, non è una notizia nuova, e magari come primo post potevo inserire qualcosa di più originale. Ma ci tenevo molto a parlare di questo formato: è da quando ho iniziato a fare piccole animazioni che maledico la paletta ristretta delle gif. E quindi volevo (ri)presentare un formato che potrebbe cambiare radicalmente le immagini animate sulle pagine web: il controverso Animated Portable Network Graphics.
Intanto, cos’è APNG? È una modifica delle librerie standard di PNG, il formato che unisce la capacità di gestire l’opacità con una paletta colori a 24-bit. Traduzione: colori più fedeli, buon rapporto di compressione immagine, trasparenze. GIF non è in grado di gestire le opacità parziali nè di offrire una gamma di colori convincente dopo una conversione. Non mi sembra il caso di dover tirare fuori i tecnicismi sulla gestione dei fotogrammi da parte del formato, piuttosto mi sembra interessante spiegare come ottenere immagini APNG e come visualizzarle.
Al momento questo formato è visibile in tutto il suo splendore solo nei Web Browser FireFox 3 e Opera 9.5, oppure con due visualizzatori di immagini: xnView (link) e KSquirrel (della suite KDE). Questo perchè la libreria modificata per le APNG non è ancora stata incorporata in molti programmi: e qui c’è la nota dolente, ossia il fatto che l’unico editor disponibile ora è un’estensione di FireFox. Gimp, con mia immensa tristezza, non gestisce ancora il formato e le notizie che parlavano di un plug-in per inserire questa possibilità sono contraddittorie e frammentarie: niente di sicuro nell’immediato futuro, almeno. Quindi scarichiamo il nostro plug-in FireFox ver. 1.4 e usiamo gli strumenti a nostra disposizione. Almeno supporta Javascript per velocizzare le operazioni 
Dopo che avrete letto questo post sarete scettici e avrete in antipatia il povero APNG, ma sicuramente cambierete idea dopo aver visto questi esempi:

Ok, I know, it isn’t a fresh news, perhaps my first post should be anyway more original. But I really wanted to spend some words on this format. Since I started working with little animations I swear against the limited GIF palette. So I wanna show you (if you didn’t hear of it already) the format which might change radically the web-oriented animated images: the controversial Animated Portable Network Graphics.
First, what APNG is? It’s a modified library for PNG, with the feature that manage alpha channel (also partial) and a 24-bit color palette. Translation: vivid colours, good compression ratio, opacity management. I don’t want to write an article on technical specifications of frames in the filetype, I find more interesting explaining HOW to make a APNG and HOW to display them.
By now, you can appreciate fully these animations only with FireFox 3 and Opera 9.5 Web Browsers, or with two image-viewiers: xnView (link) and KSquirrel (KDE suite). This is because the extended PNG library is not already implemented in many programs: and this is the problem, since the only editor available for APNG is an extension of FireFox. Gimp (sadly) can’t manage the filetype e the news about a plug-in with this feature are confused so we won’t see anything in a short time. So let’s download the beta FireFox Plugin (requires FF3) at addons.mozilla.org and use available resources. Anyway, the plug-in has a support for Javascript to fasten operations when you create an animation
