Eccolo a voi:
Bello vero? 😉

A new fashion is invading the notebook market: the new frontier is the Thinbook. Maybe I’m the first who call this generation of electronic products this way, so let me explain what they exactly are.
Thinbook is a notebook with a quite large LED screen (10.2 to 13.4 inches), solid state disk, many USB ports. And less than 20 mm (0.8 inches)in thickness, combined with a weight about a kilogram (2.2 pounds). They are extremely portable, good performing (equal or better than widespread netbooks), essential but elegant design. In principle there was the MacBook Air, superb Apple product out on January 15th, 2008, but with an elite price: 1800 $. So, the business started.
AsusTek was the first manufacturer on the go, with the Asus Eee S101: refined design, bright and thin 1024×600 screen, 16 GB solid state disk and a SD Card slot for more storage memory (Asus includes a 16 GB SD Card with their thinbook), LAN/WLAN/Bluetooth connectivity. Equipped with a Intel Atom CPU, weights less than a kilogram and is max 25 mm thick. 4-cells lithium battery provides about 5 hours of life. Not so good instead is RAM, only one GB on this model. Performance are not comparable with the Apple’s jewel, but the price is interesting for such a machine: 816 $, with Windows XP license. Have a look:
The other major Taiwan manufacturer, MSI, announced at CES 2009 the X-Slim 320: it has Intel Atom 1.6 GHz too, 2 GB RAM, a 13.4 inches screen with a 1366×768 resolution, 1.3 kgs in weight and 19,8 mm in thickness. It has also a HSDPA module on-board, besides LAN/WLAN/Bluetooth adaptors, 3 USB ports, 4-cell battery, similar to Asus S101. I have no news on the HD equipment, but is highly possible the same dotation of U115 (solid state disk and traditional hard disk). Elegant finitures and backlit MSI logo on the back of the screen. With a price about 800 $, it will be a nice thinbook at all. A sneak peek:
Dell’s Inspiron Mini 12 is already out. A mixture of netbook and thinbook, is 23,4 mm thick and weights 1.4 kgs. Same Atom CPU, is equipped with a GB of RAM, 3-in-1 card reader, 3-cell lithium battery pack (about 3h of life). 550 $ is the price, including Windows Vista (!!!) license. Anyway, seems that Dell has a surprise for us: there are rumors about the new ‘Adamo’, which should be their new fashionable thinbook. Good, since the Mini has a quite sterile design:
However, the most interesting news, this time, is from my Italy: Olidata ‘Conte’ will be out in May, 2009. A clear and chic design in max 21 mm (0.8″) of depth and 1.5 kgs (3.3 pounds) in weight, including the 4-cell battery. Besides the other thinbooks, it has a low voltage Intel Centrino Duo processor, 3 GB RAM, backlit 13.4″ LED display (in two versions, 1280 x 800 16:10 or 1366 x 768 16:9), solid state disk (16 GB?) or traditional hard drive (160 GB?). There are also optional modules for WiMax and HSDPA, HDMI out and acceleration sensor that prevents damages from writing on the hard drive while it moves or shakes (also detect other movements and can be used against thieves 😉 ). The price will be about 1250 $, including Vista license: would it be the Apple’s rival?
Sure it is 😀

Ci credo!
